Sclerotherapy

Address Unwanted Veins in Austin, TX

Spider veins and other visible vessels can form on the legs for a range of reasons, including genetics, long periods of standing, and exposure to ultraviolet radiation. No matter the cause of spider veins, there is an effective cosmetic solution in sclerotherapy. The medspa at Austin Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery offers the injectable treatment for anyone looking to lose the unsightly dark lines on their legs and enjoy a smoother, younger look for their skin.

The solution used for sclerotherapy causes redundant blood vessels to collapse and be reabsorbed by the body. Spider veins are very superficial and are caused by a pressure buildup in the capillaries, which stretches out the small vessels, making them larger. Spider veins are not necessary for a well-functioning circulatory system, so they can be treated without concern. Excellent injection technique is elemental to safe and successful spider vein treatment. Only an experienced medical professional with skills in the injection of small vessels less than 1 mm in size can consistently and safely treat spider veins. With each treatment there is a significant reduction in the size and number of visible vessels. After you heal, we reassess the remaining blemishes and re-treat as needed. Note that multiple treatment sessions may be necessary in order to achieve ideal aesthetic results.

How Effective is Sclerotherapy Vein Treatment?

Even with the development of laser vein therapy, sclerotherapy has maintained its position as a gold-standard treatment for unwanted veins. In many cases, just one treatment can eliminate clusters of spider veins. According to studies, the vast majority of people who receive sclerotherapy enjoy 70 to 90 percent improvement in the appearance of resistant spider veins and varicose veins. It's important to understand that it may take more than one round of injections to completely close some veins. Dr. Fisher can discuss her expectations with you at your personal consultation.

What Types of Veins Does Sclerotherapy Treat?

Sclerotherapy was the first and only minimally invasive vein treatment for some time. It has been used successfully on spider veins and varicose veins in the legs, arms, hands, chest, and other areas. In some cases, it may be performed to reduce the appearance of facial veins.

Is Sclerotherapy Painful?

We understand that the thought of having injections is unpleasant in just about any situation, including injections to get rid of unwanted veins that are causing you to feel uncomfortable or self-conscious. Dr. Fisher makes every effort to decrease the discomfort that can be associated with sclerotherapy. With the use of a tiny needle and a gentle touch, this popular vein treatment is well-tolerated by most people with minimal discomfort. There are various ways in which your injections may be made more comfortable, including applying a topical numbing medication to areas that tend to be more sensitive. These include the feet, ankles, shins, and the back of the knee. Tell Dr. Fisher if you have any veins that are sore or achy before your treatment. She can take extra measures on those veins to ensure you are as comfortable as possible.

How Long Will it Take for Treated Veins to Disappear?

The results of your sclerotherapy treatment may occur within a few weeks to a few months of your appointment. Several factors can influence the rate of speed at which the treated veins close down and get absorbed. A few include the area that's been treated, your complexion, and the thickness of the veins that have received sclerotherapy. In many cases, veins disappear with just one treatment. If your veins remain somewhat visible after several weeks, Dr. Fisher may recommend a second round of injections, usually more conservative than the first, to finish those veins off.

Why Do I Need to Wear Compression After Receiving Sclerotherapy?

You may be advised to purchase compression stockings before your sclerotherapy appointment and to bring them with you to our office. This allows us to apply them immediately after your injections. Unless you've had only the tiniest spider veins treated, your treatment will be well-complemented by the use of compression for a few weeks. The garments that you wear apply gentle pressure on the treatment area to help move all blood out of the treated veins as they close down. Compression pushes blood upward out of the legs better than the natural movement of the calf muscles, so can accelerate your recovery time while simultaneously improving the efficacy of your procedure. Additionally, your compression stockings can reduce the soreness and tenderness you experience as a side effect of your treatment.
