What is Permanent Makeup?
Permanent makeup, also called micropigmentation or cosmetic tattooing, is a cosmetic procedure that places colored pigment into the top layers of skin to outline and enhance facial features. Permanent makeup is often used on the eyebrows, eyes and lips to add definition and color. It can also be used to minimize the appearance of burns or scars, balance out skin pigmentation differences or create the illusion of hair where none is present. Permanent makeup may be right for you if:

- You want to reduce the amount of time it takes to get ready
- You want to maintain your look while sweating, swimming or doing any activity that would otherwise remove traditional makeup
- Makeup application is difficult for you because of arthritis or other health conditions
- Your skin is sensitive or allergic to conventional makeup
- You have hair loss due to an accident, burn, cosmetic surgery or chemotherapy
Is Permanent Makeup the Same as a Body Tattoo?
Although permanent makeup and body tattoos both require artistry and precision, the two processes are also distinctly different. While both techniques place color into the skin, permanent makeup typically uses pigment that contains less metal and only goes into the top layers of skin, meaning that it will fade and eventually disappear. Body tattoos use ink instead of pigment. The ink contains more metal and is deposited into deeper layers of skin, which makes the tattoo permanent. Be aware that the location of the treatment area, sun exposure, age and the quality of the skin impact the integrity and longevity of both permanent makeup and body tattoos.
Tattoo artists are not allowed to perform permanent makeup procedures on the face. The clinician performing your permanent makeup procedure has additional specialized training and can use special topical numbing creams that tattoo artists cannot use. In addition, the instrument used by your clinician is designed specifically for the delicate skin of the face, to provide the most natural-looking enhancement in the safest manner possible.
Eyeliner Tattooing
Eyeliner tattooing is a permanent makeup procedure that places pigment along the upper and/or lower eyelid, near the lash line. This line can be blended into the lash line or left as a distinctive line. The permanent makeup instrument used to create your eyeliner tattoo is incredibly precise, allowing your clinician to create a line that is as thick or dark as you prefer. The device contains a needle that makes micro-punctures in the skin to deposit the pigment. Tattooed eyeliner will fade after a couple of years, so you may eventually need touchups to maintain your look.
Please note that you will need to avoid the use of a lash conditioning serum (such as RevitaLash or Latisse) for seven days before your procedure and for two weeks after your procedure.
Eyebrow Tattooing
Eyebrow tattooing is one of the longest-lasting permanent makeup applications. The instrument used to create your eyebrow tattoo contains a needle that penetrates the skin and deposits pigment directly into the skin through a tapping motion. This motion places a large amount of pigment into the eyebrow, which in turn makes eyebrow tattooing last much longer than other eyebrow treatments. Tattooed eyebrows suit patients who prefer dark, crisp or bold eyebrows or want permanent makeup for their eyebrows that requires little or no maintenance.
Please note that you will need to avoid the use of a brow conditioning serum (such as RevitaBrow) for seven days before your procedure and for two weeks after your procedure.
Full Lip & Lip Liner Tattooing
Lip tattooing is excellent for patients who have thin or colorless lips. While lip tattooing doesn’t add filler or volume to your lips, it does add definition, which enhances the appearance of your lips to give the illusion of a fuller pout. Your clinician will use a handheld device that deposits pigment into your lip via a thin needle that moves up and down. The clinician will draw a precise line around the border of your lips. Depending on your preference, your lips can be left outlined or the color can be blended to the middle of your lips. Permanent lip liner may fade 25 to 50 percent in the first week and will naturally diminish in 12 to 18 months. Touch ups are recommended to maintain your lip tattoo.
Your Permanent Makeup Procedure
The professional team at Austin Cosmetic Medspa will review your concerns and goals and discuss the treatment plan to ensure you get the look you desire. Colors will be evaluated to determine the exact shade for you. Once all the details are confirmed, a topical numbing cream is typically applied to the treatment area and given 20 minutes to work. When the treatment area is numb, your clinician will use the handheld instrument to administer pigment via a thin, sterile needle. They will go back and forth across the treatment site to create the proper shade, shape and color. You may feel a vibrating or prickling sensation as the needle places pigment into the top layers of skin. The application of your permanent makeup may take one to two hours, depending on location.
Recovery Following a Permanent Makeup Procedure
For the first day following your permanent makeup procedure, you can expect minor swelling and discomfort in the treatment area. A cold compress can help minimize your discomfort. The color of the treatment area will probably appear shiny and dark, while the surrounding tissue may be swollen and red. Scabs will form and your skin may peel. Resist the urge to pick at these areas, so that the skin can heal properly. Keep the area clean and apply moisturizer to keep your skin supple.
If you had your brows or eyeliner tattooed, you will need to avoid the use of brow or lash conditioning serums (such as RevitaLash, RevitaBrow and Latisse) for 2 weeks after your procedure. Exercise, swimming and sweating should be avoided for approximately three days. Traditional makeup can harbor germs and may contain dyes and chemicals; thus, we recommend that you avoid wearing makeup on the treatment area for one week to prevent infection and irritation. Minimize sun exposure, now and in the future, to help the area heal and enhance the longevity of your permanent makeup.
Permanent Makeup Results
You will immediately notice the results of your permanent makeup procedure. Your skin care regimen, sun exposure and skin elasticity, along with the location of your permanent makeup, will impact the speed at which the pigment fades. Lip color and microblading tend to fade the fastest, lasting six to 18 months. Eyeliner tattoos can maintain color for a few years, and eyebrow tattooing can last for 10 years or more. Touchups are recommended for most permanent makeup procedures to preserve the color, shape and appearance of the application.
