At Austin Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, our mission extends far beyond surgical excellence—it is rooted in compassion, advocacy, and walking alongside patients through every step of their journey. This year, we are incredibly proud to share that our very own Courtney Duesing, Reconstructive Patient Care Coordinator, was recognized as one of four featured survivors at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium (SABCS) through SurvivorNet.
About the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium (SABCS)
The San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium is one of the most respected global conferences in breast cancer care. Each year, it brings together leading researchers, physicians, clinicians, and patient advocates from around the world to share the latest scientific advancements, treatment strategies, and innovations in breast cancer research.
Beyond groundbreaking data and clinical trials, SABCS also serves as a powerful platform for survivor voices—reminding the medical community that behind every statistic is a real person, a family, and a story of resilience.
SurvivorNet’s Survivor Voices: Stories That Inspire
During this year’s symposium, SurvivorNet highlighted four extraordinary breast cancer survivors who offered deeply personal perspectives on diagnosis, treatment, and life beyond cancer:
- Nicole Eggert
- Courtney Duesing
- Tivisay “TJ” Herrera
- Chief Master Sergeant Chanda Conger
These women shared intimate reflections on their journeys, marked by unwavering strength, vulnerability, and devotion to family. Their stories shed light on the emotional realities of breast cancer—fear, hope, grief, healing, and ultimately, empowerment.
Courtney Duesing: From Survivor to Advocate
Courtney’s story is especially meaningful to our practice. As a breast cancer survivor herself, she brings a level of empathy and understanding that cannot be taught—only lived. In her role as Reconstructive Patient Care Coordinator, Courtney supports patients navigating some of the most challenging decisions of their lives, including breast reconstruction following mastectomy.
Her firsthand experience allows her to connect with patients on a deeper level, offering reassurance, education, and compassion from someone who truly understands the journey. Being featured by SurvivorNet at SABCS is a testament to Courtney’s strength and her commitment to helping others feel seen, heard, and supported.
Why Survivor Voices Matter
At Austin Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, we believe that patient-centered care means listening—really listening—to the voices of those who have walked this path. Survivor stories like Courtney’s remind us why reconstruction matters: it’s not just about restoring form, but about healing, confidence, and reclaiming a sense of self.
We are honored to have Courtney as part of our team and incredibly proud to see her advocacy recognized on such a prestigious stage.
